The Tunnel

The Tunnel at City Center, located on Kaivokatu Street, is also the main passenger route to Helsinki’s Central Railway Station (Rautatientori). It was completed in 1967 and was immediately seen as a destination station for consumers, with opening hours longer than anywhere else in Finland. Since the opening of the Helsinki Metro in June 1982 Rautatientori has become the busiest station in the whole network.

City Center’s Tunnel Street

“Tunnel Street” as it is now known is an 1100 sq. m. retail space located directly underneath City Center, and was opened at the end of 2003. The style and look of Tunnel Street is intended to give a glimpse into the future shape of City Center. In addition, Tunnel Street forms a part of a much larger underground shopping experience that is heated all year round. The shops in this area have a retail space ranging from 20 to 140 sq. m.

Aleksi-Hermes Corner house

The real estate company Aleksi-Hermes, (address: Keskuskatu 4 – Aleksanterinkatu 19), was annexed to City-Center in December 2004. The building was originally built in 1897 and was designed by the renowned architects Grahn, Hedman and Wasastjerna. The size of the building is 8400 sq. m. and Sponda is planning to continue City-Center’s Tunnel all the way to the corner of Aleksanterinkatu and Keskuskatu in the near future.
